Northern Ireland’s sporting community has received a significant boost with the announcement of a £1.2 million investment aimed at redeveloping the Mid Ulster Sports Arena. The funding, provided through Sport NI’s National Lottery-funded Multi-Facility Fund, is set to revolutionise the facility with modern upgrades, ensuring it meets the needs of athletes and the local community alike.
The redevelopment plan includes the construction of an eight-lane athletics track that meets Track Mark accreditation standards and a cutting-edge FIFA-approved 3G synthetic pitch. Additional enhancements such as floodlighting, fencing, and essential amenities will further elevate the arena’s offerings.
Driving Community Engagement in Sports
The Multi-Facility Fund, supported by National Lottery contributions, focuses on creating versatile sports environments that combine indoor and outdoor facilities. This approach aims to foster community engagement and inspire individuals to adopt active lifestyles.
Richard Archibald, Interim CEO of Sport NI, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Sport has the power to transform lives. This funding empowers councils like Mid Ulster to provide their communities with better access to sports. The Mid Ulster Sports Arena will become a beacon for athletic activity, benefiting sports clubs, schools, and residents.”

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons welcomed the investment as a significant advantage for the Cookstown area, emphasising its potential to encourage participation across all age groups and abilities. “This funding will create an exceptional resource that promotes football and athletics while inspiring more people to embrace a healthier, active lifestyle,” Lyons remarked.
Councillor Eugene McConnell, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, praised Sport NI and National Lottery players for their invaluable support. He highlighted the facility’s inclusive design, developed in collaboration with Disability Sport Northern Ireland, which will cater to rural residents, young athletes, and individuals with disabilities. “These inclusive upgrades will help local talent realise their sporting ambitions and foster positive change in the years to come,” McConnell said.

This initiative is part of a larger effort by Sport NI’s Multi-Facility Fund, which has allocated over £3 million to projects across Mid Ulster and Strabane. Thanks to National Lottery players, who contribute more than €30 million weekly to support good causes, transformative projects like this continue to thrive.
